So it’s been a while since I last updated my blog! The thing is, I have always wanted to learn programming. It has basically been my life-long goal :D That is why I was a bit sad that I didn’t have the chance to study (at least I wasn’t aware of the “chance”) coding during the three year’s game design programme and I knew I wanted to learn it at some point. Since this fall I have been focusing on creating a website for myself, building my portfolio and practising 3D, I thought why not also apply for a programming course from Aalto’s Open University. However, now that I have been busy with the website and the portfolio, I ended up starting the course a bit late… So now I am extremely busy doing a ton of Java exercises for the next two weeks.
I do have to say that I mostly want to learn programming for game development purposes but even though this course doesn’t teach me game programming, it still teaches me the basics of Java and I’m pretty happy about it! After this I can hopefully move on to learning Unity and C#.

I have played Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery for some time now even though the gameplay is not what I expected. I was looking forward to discovering the castle and practising flying on my broom and winning quidditch matches etc. etc. but all I do is use my extremely limited energy on never ending classes by simply pressing my phone screen. Oh well, at least the game has pretty graphics and nice hairstyles (especially one dreadlocks hairstyle!)… That’s why I wanted to try out and create dreadlocks by using the fibermesh in ZBrush. Again, I found an excellent tutorial how to do dreadlocks and all I did was follow the guidelines!

All I can show right now are some BPR renders that I did in Zbrush but hopefully later on I’ll manage to finish the character. :)

For a long time I have wanted to learn how to do stylized fur in Zbrush. This would have been really useful to know for the horse that I sculpted and textured but apparently I decided to learn it a few weeks later… Well, better late than never. I did try out the fur alphas on the horse model and it still doesn’t quite look like it’s supposed to look but it’s a start anyways.
I followed this tutorial and it was awesome and simple!

I have played a couple of horse games and followed discussions on their forums and I noticed that a lot of people (including me) hope for some variation for the horse’s mane and tail. That’s when I decided that when I am going to sculpt a horse, I am going to make braided hair. I was a little bit unsure where to even begin but gladly I found this tutorial online (in fact, she is a teacher at the university that I went to) and it helped a lot.

For the first version of the braid I had merged the sections of the braid together with dynamesh so it was in one piece. Everything was going fine until it was time to use Zremesher in Zbrush in order to have a clean topology. It just didn’t work out and the poly count was way way way too high. I tried to do a “low poly” version of it and it looked terrible.
For the next version I decided to merge the sections together but NOT to use dynamesh so basically I still had three sections of hair in one object. That worked a lot better and the UV-mapping went smoothly too
On the right I have the older version of the braid and the left one was the final version.
